Though it didn’t fit the game’s hard-boiled noir tones, the kung fu moves were incredibly fun to use – and actually complemented the game’s shoot-dodging perfectly. Unofficially, this mod is the best way to replay Max Payne. Ive had it for ages and I am wondering if there are any mods and bug fixes for it. Also are there any for sudden strike?
Released almost five years ago, Max Payne still retains its status as one of the most revered games in PC history. Well, not only does it still manage to look fairly decent even on a modern system (thanks in the main to having maximum settings that topped out well above anything a 2001 vintage PC could handle), but it is also so damn cool.Payne remains the classic game noir, and was also the first game to employ bullet time. The Kung Fu mod allows our hero Max to use, you guessed it, kung fu. Not just any kung fu though, oh no.In Kung Fu Version 3, Payne can run up walls, bludgeon all comers with a deadly staff, carry out numerous flip and spin moves and slam enemies into one another. The moves flow nicely into combinations and the range of extra dodges and slides provide you with more than a fighting chance of avoiding incoming fire while closing the range to bust heads. One of the advantages of the Kung Fu mod is that it opens up the ability to select levels. While this may sound like it eliminates challenge from the game, which in some respects it does, this is actually a great addition - as it means you can pick your favourite set piece from the game and pile on in right away.Part of the charm of the original Max Payne is the replayability, taking down rooms of hoodlums can be done in any number of ways; the Kung Fu mod takes this and expands on it, giving you even more great ways to kill everybody you meet, without separating you too far from the look and feel of the original game. The way that the Kung Fu mod feels so natural an extension of the original game cannot be undervalued, as it means that you lose none of the atmosphere. With Payne as the first game to include bullet time and arriving at the same sort of time as the Matrix movies, tying the one to the other was inevitable. This match made in heaven was strengthened by the fact that for some inexplicable reason nobody has yet been able to make a Matrix computer game that's been any good at all. Take a game that's already good, stick Neo in it, bingo, you've got the best Matrix game of the bunch.
Matrix Upgraded is not so much a mod in itself, more a collection of mods by various authors - including Kung Fu Version 3 - tied together in unison. Is more of a complete conversion than any of the others listed, as it does away with the original levels completely. The new story drops you into the role of a jaded assassin who, having walked away from his past and his organisation, now has to deal with the consequences. The consequences naturally being that in return for his desertion, his former comrades want to chop him up into very fine strips with very sharp swords.Katana offers a different combat system to the original Max Payne and to the other mods we've looked at, providing a Jedi Knight style sword fighting system including combos, parrying and an array of moves some easy to implement, some more complex. The sword is complemented by a range of weapons and although there is no explanation given for how you can use dual pistols while you've still got a sword in your hand, this isn't really a deal breaker. The Katana mod is an impressive departure from the original game. Installing mods for Max Payne could not be simpler and is one of the key reasons it is worth trying - unlike some games that require shortcut tinkering and irreparable changes to the original files, Max Payne relies simply on adding the mod file to the main directory, then selecting the mod you want to use on the launcher menu.It is about as simple a system as you are likely to find, making it an ideal game for those who are new to the whole modding process.

Thanks largely to the age of Max Payne and the age of most of the mods, while many feature some pretty large scale fights and bigger guns this is generally nothing that should really hit the framerate of a modern gaming computer and despite some squareness to the characters, with the graphics cranked up good and high the game still looks good.
